No offense to some of these Hollywood Heroin Is A Damnsel Movies made for television "specials". What's with every movie where a woman gets executed it's because a man hasn't saved her. Why not it's because she didn't rescue her own skin. At least with Xena, she kind of rescued herself a few times. Although even she gets the ax (or rather sword) to the neck at some point.
At least with fantasy, you have Song Of Ice And Fire trying to change that aspect. It's not even historical as whole, it's these made for TV movies that have court drama reduced to an hour and twenty minutes. And guess what they cut for time? I bet you'll never guess. It's television. FEMALE FUCKING BEHEADINGS. The man is always on screen these days, or at least isn't saved by someone other than them self.
They continue this tradition even in like French Revolution movies where either the lady gets rescued, she gets The Widow but it cuts to off screen, or she somehow improbably rescues herself. From a method of execution that people have known for years is literally more humane than lethal injection or the electric chair. If you're concerned about their eyes rolling around in their heads, then maybe DON'T WATCH PERIOD PIECES.
At least historical as a whole tries to be good about this, at least in book form. It's depressing though, which I'm not generally a historical fan for reasons beyond the scope of this post.
But try not shielding the eyes of adult American like a nanny state on something I want to be smoking now and go Robbin Hood with.
Like first it was this Godzilla clone rip off, then it was AKIAC, then it's ... this thing remaked to death about the Tudors. I just don't have the energy to review them.
This is why I don't watch TV anymore, especially conservative networks. Oh and forget Television portrayals of women's beheading in SciFi channel. That's like the Disney channel for adults.
